Cortina d'Ampezzo, 11 June 2020_ From today Cortina says goodbye to plastic: starting from 1 July 2020, the catering and administration of food and beverages, the tourist organizations that provide meals and drinks as part of their activity, entities, individuals and associations that organize parties, events and festivals, for consumption in public areas and places or places open to the public in the municipal area of Cortina d'Ampezzo, must provide exclusively crockery, straws, containers and the like in biodegradable material and compostable, in compliance with the standards indicated by the UNI EN 13432 and UNI EN 14995 standards.
For 60 days from the date of publication of the municipal provision, it will be possible to use non-biodegradable material stored in its warehouses, to allow its disposal.
The municipal ordinance published today therefore provides for the elimination of single-use plastic by merchants and entities operating in the area in the administration of food and drinks, in line with the "European Strategy for Plastics" launched by the European Commission in January 2018.
"The use of single-use plastic is part of our daily life and it is complex to reverse such a widespread and deep-rooted habit. But it is our duty to contribute to the reduction at all levels of the use of plastic. Recycling is not enough, it is necessary to reduce its production. And push producers to use materials that are not only biodegradable, but compostable, so that the impact of our daily actions does not leave negative traces on the future. Cortina is therefore part of the mountain localities that go back "to their origins" even in the shelters where, only a few years ago, it was normal practice to use glass glasses and jugs without resorting to plastic "declares Paola Coletti, Councilor of the Municipality of Cortina d 'Ampezzo.
After joining in June 2019, together with other municipal, regional and state bodies, the awareness campaign of the Ministry of the Environment "Plastic Free Challenge", eliminating the use of plastic in its offices, the Municipality of Cortina is therefore expanding its environmental commitment involving the realities of the territory.
The Queen of the Dolomites thus marks a new step in the path towards the realization of the "Cortina Model", which has as its primary objectives the quality of life of citizens and tourists, the preservation of the natural environment and a healthy environment for all, resilience socio-economic thanks to the balanced interaction between quality of life and competitiveness.
