What is the foundation?
In 2009, UNESCO registered the Dolomites as a Natural World Heritage Site. It is a complex asset both from a geographical and administrative point of view, made up of nine systems and spread over 142 thousand hectares in 5 provinces and 3 regions. In 2010, in agreement with UNESCO, the Foundation was born, whose task is to ensure effective management of the serial property, promote its sustainable development and promote collaboration between the territorial bodies that administer their territory according to different regulations.
The Dolomites, however, are not an uninterrupted chain of peaks, but nine mountain systems separated from each other by valleys, rivers, other mountain groups. The 142,000 hectares that make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site constitute a sort of archipelago, spread over a much larger Alpine area and divided into five different Provinces from an institutional and administrative point of view.
On May 13, 2010, following the specific commitment made to UNESCO to ensure effective and coordinated management of the Dolomites, the Provinces and Regions involved established the Dolomiti - Dolomiten - Dolomites - Dolomitis UNESCO Foundation. These are the Provinces of Belluno, Bolzano, Pordenone, Trento, Udine, and the two Regions Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto.
The headquarters of the UNESCO Foundation is located in the historic Comùn Vecio (old city hall).
